The Higher Education Department was established effective July 1, 1959, as a new unit of instruction separated from the original Secondary Education Department. George Hand was the first Dean. The Higher Education Department is responsible for offering courses dealing with the preparation of teacher's for colleges, universities, junior colleges, vocational technical schools and correspondence schools. The department of Higher Education merged with Educational Administration on 1 July 1985, to become the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education.
